Traffic Climate evaluations
Liikenneturva launched the traffic climate evaluations in 1992. In these evaluations, the drivers are interviewed and they are asked about their views regarding the state of traffic. The drivers evaluate the current climate reigning in traffic by using the school grade system from 4 to 10. The highest grade (10) stands for polite, rule-abiding and safety-conscious. The weakest grade (4) means disparaging attitude towards rules and safety, tense and selfish.
- The drivers evaluate whether the traffic climate has improved, worsened or stayed the same over the past six months.
- The drivers assess whether the negative characteristics of traffic − such as speeding, cutting in, selfish driving habits, disregard for rules and dangerous passing – have increased or decreased.
- The drivers assess whether the positive characteristics of traffic – such as politeness, flexibility, considerate passing, friendliness and helpfulness – have increased or decreased.
On the basis of the evaluations conducted in the 1990’s, one can state that the climate is felt to have degraded since the mid-nineties, while previously there was a phase of positive development which lasted for several years.
